The Spider Crane – Staying Productive During a Commercial Relocation

Welcome to the first installment of our three-part series on “Staying Productive During a Commercial Relocation.” Today, we will discuss the spider crane and in the next installments we will cover the Boxless Move and Handling Computer Stations.

In our experience, companies view corporate downtime from 5:00 P.M. on Friday to 8:30 A.M. on Monday. To us, corporate downtime is not just when the mover is there, but the time your employees spend preparing for a move and unpacking after the move. To create a more efficient commercial move, we’ve developed a system where we minimize employee downtime and risk of damage.

How does a company stay productive and effective when preparing for an office move, when there are offices and boxes and files to be moved? Filing cabinets offer the biggest challenge to relocating businesses because they are a vital part of the day-to-day work and companies can’t afford to lose or misplace any documents.

How do companies usually handle the files in the filing cabinet?

Spider Crane in ActionFrom our experience, companies usually plan on having an intern or a member of the admin staff take out all of the files and put them into boxes. This way, the boxes and filing cabinets are moved separately. This is one way to do it, but it’s not productive and there is some risk involved.

This is not a productive use of time because the packing and subsequent re-filing of the files will not allow the employee to focus on their normal, assigned tasks. We estimate it takes 90 minutes per filing cabinet to unload and reload the files. How many lateral filing cabinets are in your office?

The more times something is handled, the greater chance it will be misplaced or lost. Can you afford to misplace or lose a file? What happens if the files are out of order? It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it prevents your employees from being as effective as possible.

How can JK help?

We use the Spider Crane for filing cabinets that qualify. When they qualify, we place the filing cabinet on a steel dolly with a 4 degree tilt and we are able to move them fully loaded. We are also able to prep the filing cabinets in advance of the move, while still allowing your employees access to the files up till move day. Watch the video below to see the Spider Crane in action.

The Spider Crane allows you and your team to be more productive because you will have access to your files up until move day and your employees won’t have to worry about packing and then re-filing them after the move. After the move, the files will be in the same location and in the same order as before so your employees will have no problem getting back up to speed.
