On the first and third Thursday of the month, movers from across North America participate in a discussion on Twitter, called MoveChat, where stories, tips, and advice are shared. Every chat, we discuss a specific part of the moving process. This week the topic was, “Special Considerations for Long Distance Moving” and what follows is an edited transcript of the discussion. To view the full discussion, simply log into Twitter and follow the hashtag #movechat.
Q1. A long distance move is just a local move with more stops for gas, isn’t it?
HAuston May need just a little more planning.
jkmoving There are actually many unique aspects of long distance moves, requiring more detailed planning, further in advance.
HAuston Establishing a time line and budget for your move is a good starting point for a long distance move.
Q2. So, what additional factors need to be accounted for?
VictoryVanCorp Drivers should be extra cautious with long distances & insurance on goods may be more relevant.
HAuston Start with getting estimates, start a moving file. Research your new city.
HAuston Medical records, pet and school records need attention. Have a conversation with your insurance agent.
Q3. Once the truck is packed, the driver will leave and go straight to my new house, won’t they?
HAuston Check and recheck delivery spread dates on your Bill of Lading. Get on the same page with your movers.
jkmoving Not usually. For cost efficiency, long distance drivers carry multiple shipments, so they may have drop offs along the way.
HAuston Also pay attention to your travel plans.
jkmoving You’ll have a delivery window of a few days. Stay in contact with your mover to keep up to date on when they’ll arrive.
VictoryVanCorp Yes, and make sure that you have plenty of essentials packed for day to day use until your goods arrive.
Q4. Are the same packing materials and trucks used for a long distance move as for a local move?
VictoryVanCorp You have to pull out the big guns for the long distance moves! 18 wheelers fit multiple deliveries.
jkmoving Packing materials are similar, but trucks differ. A tractor trailer will be used rather than a smaller local vehicle.
HAuston As you mentioned earlier, for efficiency larger vehicles can carry more shipments. Better for the environment. Save resources.
