JK Moving and the Affordable Care Act

As of January 1, 2014 another section of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) came into effect. Some moving companies have made the hard decision to limit employee hours to thereby control their healthcare costs. By reducing employee’s hours under 29 per week, a company is no longer required to offer medical insurance because the employee is no longer considered full time. As you can imagine, it’s a delicate balance between the employees and the company. Companies are saving and controlling costs, but to what gain?

We are pleased to report that JK Moving is not a moving company that is limiting employees’ hours to limit access to healthcare. JK makes a strong commitment to its employees, because our employees are our most important asset.

Because the ACA is in its infancy, we have provided our employees with internal Healthcare Reform newsletters. This way, our employees knew what plans they had available through JK and when they could enroll into new plans.

The newsletter also provided a glossary of terms so our employees could better understand the system. In fact, one article explained the penalties of not having insurance. Another article explained how to avoid potential scams in the Insurance Marketplace. And of course, our Benefits Administrator was always available for the employees, whether it was pre-dawn group sessions, one-on-one meetings, or email. Our goal was to make sure our employees knew everything they needed to know regarding the healthcare changes well in advance.

And although some movers limited employees’ hours to control costs, JK went in a different direction and actually introduced a new, second medical plan. This gives employees the opportunity to choose from two distinct types of healthcare coverage, whichever one suited their and their families’ needs best.

Why would JK continue to support, offer, and expand healthcare benefits when other moving companies are limiting employee hours in an effort to control costs? Similar to our 401(k) Safe Harbor and Profit Sharing Plan, we want to continue rewarding our employees for their excellent work and give them another reason to stay with JK to build a long term career.
