MoveChat – How to Budget for your Upcoming Move

On the first and third Thursday of the month, movers from across North America participate in a discussion on Twitter, called MoveChat, where stories, tips, and advice are shared. Every chat, we discuss a specific part of the moving process. This week the topic was, “How to Budget for your Upcoming Move” and what follows is an edited transcript of the discussion. Q1. What are the first steps to creating a move budget?

HAuston Allow plenty of time to outline the scope of your move. Distance, time of year, number of family members, etc.

PortageCartage Like any budget, determine what your priorities are. Choose one: a) good quality b) low price.

movingpro Also, details, details, details! Knowing exactly what you’re dealing w/ (e.g. amount that needs to get moved) is a 1st step

HAuston A good understanding of any relo packages and or tax incentives / deductions.

Q2. What are potential extra costs that a customer may have to pay?

movingpro It’s important4a customer 2 know exactly what’s covered in the move price. If using movers, are boxes included? Other supplies?

HAuston Be ready for any delays due to closing glitches. Additional charges for shuttles,etc. difficult deliveries.

PortageCartage You may be paying extra if there are long walks, lots of stairs, no access for a semi, etc.

jkmoving In addition to all other great tips, remember to budget for hotel rooms, turning on/off utilities, lunch and dinner

Q3. Ways to save money while moving?

PortageCartage Downsize! The less you have, the less moving will cost you. The first world has too much stuff anyway. 🙂

HAuston Get rid of items no longer needed. Let the professionals handle packing fragile items. #organize

jkmoving To save money, look to limit what you’re moving (donate, recycle, yard sale) and buy at destination

Q4. Any other tips for customers and budgeting for a move?

HAuston Start early as possible, organize and downsize.
