Don't forget your holiday decorations!

Don’t forget your holiday decorations!

Are you planning a move this upcoming holiday season? If yes, here are six tips and suggestions to make your move and holiday season more joyful.

1.Look to donate holiday decorations that haven’t been on display for years.

We always recommend minimizing how much you move, and with your holiday decorations you can donate them and spread a little more holiday cheer for a local non-profit organization.

2.When sending out your holiday cards make it a “two-fer” by letting everyone know of your upcoming move and using your new address as the return address.

And while you’re at it, make sure you change your address with the post office!

3.Verify that all utilities are turned on and ready to go the day you arrive.

While it’s fun to enjoy the fireplace with a glass of hot chocolate, you’re going to want electricity during the holidays.

4.Have each member of the family create their own special holiday mix CD or playlist and take turns listening as you carol to your new home.

5.Keep the traditions alive as best you can (and create new ones).

Before your move, talk with your family and find out what holiday traditions matter most to them and celebrate every one you can. It will be a challenge to keep all the traditions alive, but remember traditions have to start somewhere!

6.Talk with your realtor about the holiday schedule for your new community.

The tree lighting, or community holiday play are all great ways to meet new people in the area, get out of the house for a few hours, and start some new traditions.

Traveling during the holidays can be a challenge, so do your best to plan ahead. This means making a list, checking it twice and doing your best to keep everything under control. And remember, weather will be a factor, businesses don’t always keep normal hours, and there may be a parade on your move-in day. Plan ahead and you shouldn’t run into any major issues.

I once moved to another country just before Christmas. It wasn’t my choice, rather it was the job that dragged me away at a time of year when I most need familiar places and people. Being in another country, where the residents spoke another language and celebrated the holidays differently, was hard; harder still was the time difference that prevented me from calling my family when I needed to the most.
